History : KALAPANI a.k.a Cellular Jail
- Established : The main complex was constructed between 1896 and 1906.
- Location : Andaman and Nicobar Islands
- Purpose : It was a prison used by the British especially to exile political prisoners to the remote group of islands. The famous political leaders were tortured mercilessly in this confinement.
- Intriguing facts :
- It is called cellular as it is made of individual cells for solitary confinement.
- It has been declared as a national memorial.
- Subash Chandra Bose hoisted the national flag near the cellular jail on December 30, 1943 and proclaimed independence from British rule.
