History : KALAPANI a.k.a Cellular Jail

  • Established : The main complex was constructed between 1896 and 1906.
  • Location : Andaman and Nicobar Islands
  • Purpose : It was a prison used by the British especially to exile political prisoners to the remote group of islands. The famous political leaders were tortured mercilessly in this confinement.
  • Intriguing facts :
  1. It is called cellular as it is made of individual cells for solitary confinement.
  2. It has been declared as a national memorial.
  3. Subash Chandra Bose hoisted the national flag near the cellular jail on December 30, 1943 and proclaimed independence from British rule.
